POP Updates and January Meeting Notice

Thursday, December 20, 2018 - 22:30

Good cheer! Yep, the year is nearly over and the Steering Committee met to discuss plans for POP with the new Indivisible Guide - on OFFENSE!

First let’s review a few of our accomplishments:
1.There have been many a rally, many a letter to the editor, many postcards written, parades (Earth Day) and marches. We have met to support each other, and to support candidates (yay Kathy Schwartz) and to pass measures (i.e. Measure 101 last January) and defeat measures (i.e 105). Even though our CD2 race didn’t turn out the way we wanted we have certainly laid the groundwork for future voter engagement in our communities.
2. Gorge Ice Resistance was formed out of the POP immigration committee and has been standing in solidarity for 600 days as of tomorrow, December 21. Gorge Ice Resistance has partnered with the Rural Organizing Project (ROP), Gorge Ecumenical Ministries, and the Hood River Latino Network to protest hunger strikes by refugees and immigrants and to end the ICE contract that inhumanely detains these people inside the NORCOR walls.
3. The Out of the Kitchen Marching Band has formed to sing and march, has performed at the November POP meeting, and at the December “Big Ass Celebration” in Hood River!
4. The 2018 election was successful in changing the House to control by the Democrats and the Indivisible Guide was updated to a new strategy of OFFENSE.

The Steering Committee will be contacting as many members of POP as possible to determine:
1. If we want to change our name to reflect that we are an Indivisible group as discussed at the November meeting.
2. Discuss offense and what direction/actions does the group want to focus on; such as attending/participating in local city, county, board meetings, voter engagement/education, calls to action, etc.
3. How to expand and strengthen our group and work with other groups and Indivisible.
