High Priority Turnout Needed Wednesday July 17 at 5:30 pm

Saturday, July 13, 2019 - 17:00

We are calling on all POP members and friends to attend a public hearing with the Wasco County Commission to support gun safety laws already enacted by the Oregon Legislature. The hearing will be this Wednesday, July 17, at 5:30 pm in the County Courthouse, upstairs. Please be sure to click the link in this message to continue reading. Your email will probably only display an abbreviated form of my message to you.

For those who attended the June POP meeting, you are probably aware that a group of gun rights activists has asked the Wasco County Commission to pass a resolution that would essentially make Wasco County a "sanctuary" from any gun safety legislation passed by the Oregon Legislature in the past and also in the future. In other words, they are asking that the county ignore and even disobey state laws that are any more restrictive than the Constitution, and since the Constitution is completely vague and void of any specifics beyond "we have the right to bear arms," well, you get the picture. This is an extremely radical document, but other counties in Oregon have passed similar resolutions. So......

The County Commission is holding a public forum this Wednesday at 5:30 in the County Courthouse. We consider this a HIGH PRIORITY issue locally, and we are asking that as many people as possible turn out to show our opposition to such a resolution. You may speak but do not have to at all. We just need numbers to show the Commission that this matters to us. Please come, and pass the information on to your friends and family. We do not want Wasco County to devolve into the lawlessness that this group is seeking.

I have attached the text of the group's proposal as a pdf document. I'm sorry for the poor quality copy. Some of us will be meeting on Sunday to discuss a strategy and some talking points, and I will send you further updates as we get more information and more resources.
